Routine check-ups

Here are some of the medical tests I may discuss if you’re at risk for kidney disease.

ACR (Albumin-to-creatinine ratio)
If kidneys aren’t working well, protein ends up in the urine. ACR detects this protein—an early sign of kidney damage.

eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate)
This measures how well kidneys filter wastes out of the blood.

Blood pressure
High blood pressure is a leading cause of kidney disease.

Blood glucose (sugar)
This test checks for diabetes, the leading cause of kidney failure.

Cholesterol
High cholesterol may indicate risk for heart disease, a major risk factor for kidney disease.

Renal Biopsies

A kidney biopsy is a procedure to remove a small piece of kidney tissue that can be examined under a microscope for signs of damage or disease.

Your doctor may recommend a kidney biopsy — also called renal biopsy — to diagnose a suspected kidney problem. It may also be used to see how serious a kidney condition is, or to monitor treatment for kidney disease. You may also need a kidney biopsy if you’ve had a kidney transplant that’s not working properly.

Glomerular Kidney Disease

Glomerular diseases affect the filtering units of your kidney, the glomeruli. Symptoms include foamy urine, pink urine, high blood pressure and swelling in your face, hands, ankles or feet. Many diseases can cause glomerular disease. The leading cause is diabetes-related nephropathy. Treatments depend on the cause. The goal is to prevent or slow kidney damage.

Permanent Dialysis

Dialysis is a treatment for people whose kidneys are failing. When you have kidney failure, your kidneys don’t filter blood the way they should. As a result, wastes and toxins build up in your bloodstream. Dialysis does the work of your kidneys, removing waste products and excess fluid from the blood.

Catheters Insertions

Dialysis catheters are artificial indwelling transcutaneous conduits used to access the intravascular space or intraperitoneal space for renal replacement therapy. Different types of catheters are used for different dialysis modalities: wide-bore central venous lines are used in extracorporeal renal replacement therapy (which hemodialysis, hemofiltration, hemodiafiltration, and ultrafiltration), while smaller transabdominal lines are used in peritoneal dialysis. This activity reviews the different types of dialysis catheters, their indications and contraindications, and the techniques involved in placing dialysis catheters.

Renal Transplant

A kidney transplant is a surgery to place a healthy kidney from a living or deceased donor into a person whose kidneys no longer function properly.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located on each side of the spine just below the rib cage. Each is about the size of a fist. Their main function is to filter and remove waste, minerals and fluid from the blood by producing urine.
